Utah Crushes BYU In Rivaly Game, 54-10
Over the past couple of years, the BYU-Utah rivalry game has had fantastic finishes for both teams and has been a toss up when it comes to picking a winner.
This year was the exception to that rule.
The Utes used seven turnovers and a stellar second half to beat their hated rival 54-10 in Provo Saturday night. The game started out nicely for Utah, when Jake Heaps could not handle a bad snap in BYU’s first possesion, which Utah recovered in the end zone to give Utah a 7-0 early lead. The Utes would get two more turnovers by way of fumbles in the first quarter, but the inept Utah offense could not capitalize on the chances with a missed field goal and a punt. BYU first three drives of the game ended in fumbles but only trailed 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The BYU offense would find life in the second when Heaps connected with his favorite reciever Ross Apo to give the Cougs at 10-7 lead. At that point it looked as if the game would be a repeat of last week’s game against USC for Utah, with the defense being able to hold BYU’s passing attack but the offense unable to convert on the chances that the defense gave them. It seemed even more so ater Jordan Wynn left for a couple of minutes with an injured elbow.
That all changed when Wynn found a second wind and the offense found life.
Wynn led the Utes down the field late in the second quarter and found his tight end Jake Murphy for a 30-yard touchdown to put Utah up 14-10 going into the second half. At that point, the game was poised for yet another amazing finish with both teams neck and neck after one half. But no one had any idea what was in store for BYU come quarter number three.
The Utah offense exploded and the defense remained strong as the Utes put up 40 points in the second half and Lavell Edwards Stadium was silent. The defense forced four more turnovers, John White ran for 173 yards and three touchdowns, and Wynn found his stride and got a touchdown to go with his one from the first half and Utah blew out the Cougars 54-10.
Utah now has a bye week to prepare for their first Pac-12 home game against a Washington team that did not look all too good against Nebrasksa on Saturday. The Cougras have to pick up the pieces on a short week and get ready for their next game against Central Florida, who lost to Florida Atlantic over the weekend.
